Lakshmi

Lakshmi

Lakshmi is the Hindu Goddess of material and spiritual prosperity, and beauty. She is said to bring good luck and protect all of her followers from poverty. She is seen as a Mother Goddess asnd is often called "mata" which means mother. The word ''Lakshmi'' is from the Sanskrit word Laksme, meaning "goal." She represents our goals in life, spiritual and mundane. In Hindu mythology, Goddess Lakshmi, is the wife of Lord Vishnu and provides him with wealth for the maintenance and preservation of the creation.

When you see Lakshmi in pictures she is usually shown as a female with four arms and four hands. The four hands represent the four ends of human life: dharma (righteousness), kama (genuine desires), artha (wealth), and moksha (liberation from birth and death.) The front hands are symbolic of the mundane world and the back hands the spiritual world. She is typically shown in red clothes, which are a symbol of being active, with gold lining for prosperity, and is usually standing upon a lotus flower. She has golden coins and lotuses in her hands. The lotus flower represents beauty, purity, and fertility. The golden coins are symbolic of her sharing prosperity with those who choose to follow her. Two elephants (some pictures show four) are shown next to the Goddess.

  2. The elephant is Lakshmi's son , Ganesh. The Divine Mother calls him " a delicate creature " . He loves that complement ! Both Lakshmi and Ganesh loves to be fed and they will graciously share their meals with you. Mother only dines at the finest places and Ganesh loves candy !
