Mimosa Pudica - The Sensitive Plant
Merry Meet :)))) I was introduced to Mimosa Pudica or shyness grass the other day. I couldn't believe it! This herb when touched will actually shrink it's leaves in response. I have a video for you so that you can see it. :)))) It's amazing!
This plant is native to South America, Central America and Brazil. It grows best in tropical and sub-tropical regions. The plants can grow up to five feet tall. The plant has small red flowers that are pink to lavender inside. The flowers bloom mid to late summer. Mimosa loves full sun light. You must use care not to disturb the roots or overwater this plant. It can also be used as a groundcover plant. Because it is a groundcover plant, you must use care when planting it, as it can quickly over-run your gardens and be difficult to remove. It is best to plant it in pots if you wish to not have it everywhere.
During the night this plant actually goes to sleep. It's leaves will fold together when it is not exposed to sunlight. With the warmth of the morning sun, the plant will "wake up" and greet the new day. It will close it's leaves when it is touched.
You can boil the roots of this herb in water and use it as a tea to assist with kidney stones, or kidney problems. The roots also act as an aphrodisiac. The leaves can be boiled to assist with diabetes and weight control. It can also assist with hypertension. When you have a cold, the boiled leaves can help with sore throats and other cold symptoms.
Please use caution when using this plant though. It has the ability to take up metal from the ground, and therefore can be toxic. I would suggest unless you are very familiar with this herb to use it for decoration, or purchase it from a reputable supplier.
Love and Blessings,
