Weather Divination

Art by Kida Ookami

How many of you can smell the rain coming?

How many of you have a headache hours before that storm comes?

How many of you can look at the night sky and know what kind of weather it's going to be based on the colors.

How many of you think everyone can do this?

I'm always met with a myriad of strange gazes when I make comments about the weather. I'm sure they must wonder why I look back at them completely confused as to how in the world they can't smell that? To me an incoming rain storm is the most obvious smell. I can pick it up a fair amount ahead of time, long enough to run to the car or get inside.

Ok so this isn't completely related to being a gifted intuitive, or is it.....

A long time ago I started googling scientific explanations for this. I found a lot of explanation like dust particles, atmospheric pressure etc. I'm not going to go completely scientific on you as I'm no scientist. I have a wonderful friend though that will probably laugh at me as he watches me stumble through this. What I do know though is what I read over and over again in a "lot" of these scientific articles. "Those who are sensitive will notice." Ha. Imagine that. No, not everyone has to lay down when a storm approaches because the pressure of the atmosphere is changing to quickly. Guess what, they can't smell the rain coming either. There's a very good change that those who understand what you're talking about are sensitive too, if you happen to find people.  Being sensitive to these changes is absolutely one form of weather divination.

There are many other observations, some which you may be familiar with. Let's take a quick peek.

Groundhog day.  If a groundhog sees his shadow or not tells us how much longer till Spring.

It is said that on Imbolc if the weather is beautiful, winter will be longer as Cailleach made it a nice day to collect firewood. If it's raining, she's asleep and Spring is near.

Whenever we were out for rides when I was little and the cows were laying down my Mom would tell me that rain would be coming.

When I see the leaves flip up on our trees I know a storm is coming.

Depending on where you are from and your family's heritage and traditions I'm sure you probably have lots of other ones.

I would reserve a page in your Book of Shadows for Weather Divination. Use that page to record any tricks that you have. When you know weather changes are coming start tracking how you feel and if you notice anything different, smells, headaches etc.   You may be surprised how well you do!
